Cable-stayed bridges have seen a tremendously successful development. While in 1986 only around 150 large cable-stayed bridges were known to have been built worldwide, their numbers have increased manifold since. Around 1975 the longest span was 404 m, which increase to 856 m in 1995 and today's record is at 1,088 m. Competing suspension bridges are more and more relegated to even longer spans and cable-stayed bridges have become the main point of interest for bridge engineers worldwide.
