"I cannot say whether things will get better if we change; what I can say is they must change if they are to get better." These words from Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (German writer, art critic and physicist, 1742–1799) may be applied to the situation in which we find ourselves with regard to standards in the construction industry. Of course it is necessary to examine the circumstances before answering the question as to whether we need something new – e.g. a new standard – and whether things will get better if we do. This principle equally applies to the introduction of the Eurocodes. This is why the "we" in the title refers to the perspective Germany may adopt, since we already have DIN 1045. Yet other circumstances need to be considered, too.
