On 23rd April in over 100 countries around the world books and reading are celebrated: book shops, publisher, libraries, schools and voluntary organisations contribute to the UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day. (source: www.un.org/en/events/bookday)
For Ernst & Sohn as publisher for civil and structural engineering that is a reason to give you some background on this special day of the year and to offer you a little present.
The first book of our publishing house - Ernst & Korn back then - comes from the pen of one of the most famous German authors: Theodor Fontane. With the foundation of the publishing house in 1851the first poems from Fontane were published. Later the next publications were focusing on civil engineering.
144 years later, on 23rd April, 1995, it was first proclaimed by the UNESCO as World Book and Copyright Day. "By celebrating this Day throughout the world, UNESCO seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold." In relation to that tradition Ernst & Sohn wants to add a little present to all customers as well. As an extra to every book order we receive from 23rd to 29th April 2016 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland we add the bookmark you can see on the left.
Ernst & Sohn is happy to welcome numerous bookshops for this little campaign and wants to take the opportunity to thank all readers, authors and partners for their constant support and the mutual love for the written/printed word!
