Urban tunnelling has become a necessity in densely populated areas. The current issue of Geomechanics and Tunnlling shows how major cities in Italy have encountered the challenge.

Aside from choosing the best way to build the tunnel - excavations, cut and cover, boring - planers had to also consider the grown structure of the cities, the predicted development of traffic and of course security mearures during construction and thereafter.
