Preview of the 60th Geomechanics Colloquium in 2011
On October 13th and 14th, 2011, the Austrian Geomechanics Association is holding its 60th Geomechanics Colloquium in its usual venue, the Salzburg Congress Centre. This year's colloquium is dedicated to Professor Ernest H. Weiss, who passed away on October 20th, 2010. The former Chair for Construction Geology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna with his exceptional powers of observation and highly developped sense for geological conditions provided important contributions to the development of the field of geomechanics.
Klaus Berner's 70th Birthday
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Berner turned 70 on July 23rd. After studying civil engineering at the TH Karsruhe and working for several years in the free economy, he began working as a research assistant in 1974 at the Institute for Statics and Steel Construction of Darmstadt Technical University where he found his true calling.

The appointment of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Gaber to the University of Technology at Karlsruhe in 1921 gave the go-ahead for the “Testing Room Gaber”, from which the Versuchsanstalt für Stahl, Holz und Steine (Research Centre for Steel, Timber and Masonry) developed later. Today, the research center is part of Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT) consisting of the departments Wood Construction and Structural Design as well as of Steel and Lightweight Structures. In the following contribution it is looked back on the history of this institution related to Steel Construction.
Professor Akimitsu Kurita reaches 65
Prof. Dr.-Eng. Akimitsu Kurita, Professor at the Osaka Institute of Technology, celebrated his 65th birthday on 23 August 2011. For more than 30 years Prof. Kurita is engaged in research and practical design of steel composite bridges as well as earthquake and fire engineering.
