Preliminary works for the new Semmering Base Tunnel – geotechnical monitoring of slope stabilization measures and earth retaining structures

In preparation for the construction of the new Semmering Base Tunnel, which will reach a length of 27.3 km, comprehensive preliminary measures had to be completed. As a part of Contract Section SBT2.3, several slope stabilization measures, as well as earth retaining structures and ramps using the reinforced earth method, were constructed.

Seismic design solutions for connections to tubular members

A review of seismic design solutions for connections is presented in this paper, with particular focus on methods that are already “pre-approved” or “acceptable to code” for use by engineers in steel-framed structures using hollow sections.

Water permeability of concrete under uniaxial tension

Concrete structures can suffer from water permeating under stresses. This paper investigates the surface water permeability of reinforced concrete elements subjected to uniaxial tension. A testing system was developed to combine a conventional loading machine with a surface permeameter. To eliminate the effect of initial absorption of water, calibration tests were conducted on plain concrete samples with different surface saturated states.

Impact Factors for 2013 are out

Recently, the Impact Factors for magazines have been published by Thomson Reuters. In 1st place for German language magazines is Beton- und Stahlbetonbau (Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Structures), followed by Bauphysik (Building Physics), both titles from the publisher Ernst & Sohn. Beton- und Stahlbetonbau is thus the most-cited German language magazine for civil engineers.

Furthermore, the Structural Concrete increased its Impact Factor for the third consecutive time. Its Impact Factor almost tripled and increased from 0.289 to 0.857, this year.
