Professor Eduardo de Arantes e Oliveira Award at XII Conference on Steel and Composite Construction in Coimbra
The XII Conference on Steel and Composite Construction takes place 21-22 November 2019 in Coimbra, Portugal. Main objective the conference is the dissemination of innovations and achievements of steel and composite construction. This edition will have as its special theme "Steel Structures as the Answer to the Climatic Changes". Publisher Ernst & Sohn and its renown Steel Construction journal, which focusses on applied research and advanced design, supports this initiative.
Hence the Organizing and the Scientific Committee let by Prof. Luís Simões da Silva and Prof. Paulo Vila Real together with Dr. Bernhard Hauke, Editor-in-Chief of the Steel Construction journal and Veronique Dehan, Secretary General of the European Convention for Constructional Steelworks ECCS call for the “Professor Eduardo de Arantes e Oliveira Award” to honor the best conference contributions.
At the same time the award esteems the achievements Professor Eduardo de Arantes e Oliveira, who was born 1933 and got his civil engineer degree 1956 form the Technical University Lisbon (UTL) and worked for the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC). In 1969 he was appointed as full professor of material resistance at UTL. His main scientific achievements are in structural mechanics and the early finite element method. He has been several times rector of UTL, director of LNEC and secretary of state for science. Professor Eduardo de Arantes e Oliveira is one of the most prominent and engaged scientists and leaders in civil engineering of the contemporary Portugal and an inspiring person.
