The Shanghai Oriental Sport Center - SOSC

A new sports park has been built in Shanghai in immediate vicinity of the EXPO exhibition ground, for the FINA World Swimming Championship, which took place in the summer of 2011. A completely redesigned landscape park comprises three sports venues as well as a large press and administration centre. The sports venues include a swimming hall, a multifunctional major event centre and an openair swimming stadium. All buildings share the same particular design language, which ensures coherence of the constructional structures as one “family”.

As a matter of course, the requirement of an economically advantageous solution and an almost untenably short planning and execution period, which are so characteristic of the building conditions in China, constantly apply to all the projects.

In Steel Construction Sven Plieninger and Chen Wei describe the planing process behind the scenes.
