Steel Construction Issue 04/2012
Cover Story: The picture shows the atrium with the south roof and the vertical façade of the United States Institute of Peace, Washington D. C.
The south roof has a total surface area of 1100 m², covers the atrium and spans 24 m between the concrete building parts. The front part of the roof is supported by the vertical façade which is horizontally supported by a tied arch. Three 10.5 m long steel props fan out from this horizontal tied arch along the façade and meet the roof near the middle of the cantilever, leaving the tip of the roof untouched. You can find more information on pages 232–237. (Photo: Timothy Hursley)
