The appointment of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Gaber to the University of Technology at Karlsruhe in 1921 gave the go-ahead for the “Testing Room Gaber”, from which the Versuchsanstalt für Stahl, Holz und Steine (Research Centre for Steel, Timber and Masonry) developed later. Today, the research center is part of Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT) consisting of the departments Wood Construction and Structural Design as well as of Steel and Lightweight Structures. In the following contribution it is looked back on the history of this institution related to Steel Construction.
