Lack of civil engineers - freedom of movement for workers comes into force on 1 May 2011
Many Bavarian engineering offices eagerly awaited May 1, 2011. That day the complete freedom of movement for workers comes into force in Germany: workes from nearly all Eastern European EU member countries will then be able to apply for jobs in Germany.
Those offices suffering from a shortage of technical personnel are hoping for qualified civil engineers especially from Poland and the Czech Republic.
"We do not expect a big rush, however, as the economies of the Eastern European countries are very dynamic", says Dr.-Ing. Heinrich Schroeter, President of the Bavarian Chamber of Civil Engineers. As a random survey conducted by chamber among smaller engineering offices showed that there is no fear of fee or wage dumping by Eastern European workers for that reason.
