Case study: Wholesale market for fruit and vegetables plus fresh fish in Bursa/Turkey
From issue 3/2010 onwards, Steel Construction will regularly feature architectonic case studies from the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS). Outstanding projects taken from architectural steel construction will be presented under the heading "Architecture Steel Stahl Acier".
The first of these is the wholesale market in Bursa/Turkey designed by the Istanbul firm of Tuncer Cakmali Architects. This spectacular covered market on a beautifully landscaped hill, directly at the western end of the famous silk route, is made up of two buildings. The central courtyard of the vegetable market is enclosed by an oval, covered arcade. The fish market is housed in a smaller building alongside it. The concept behind the two markets represents the idea of large bazaars, by linking the modern buildings with the cultural traditions of central Asia.
