Aachen and Steel Construction
With the 36th German Steelwork Conference 2012 (since 1947), The European city of Aachen will be the meeting place for German Steelwork specialists for the second time: at the last Steelwork Conference in Aachen in 1964, lightweight metal construction was the theme of the technical and scientific papers, and this still plays an important role in steelwork and is also the theme of the December issue of Stahlbau .
Building in iron has a long tradition in Aachen: horizontal shear from the dome, which roofs the octagon of the cathedral, is supported by a wrought iron ring anchor installed about 1200 years ago. The master builder of the cathedral Helmut Maintz will give a talk at the evening meeting of the Steelwork Conference on 18 October 2012 about the use of iron to stabilise the cathedral.
But Aachen has more to offer than its proud building history. At the RWTH university, the entire field of steel construction has been prominently represented by Professor Friedrich Heinzerling (1824-1906), August Hertwig (1872-1955), Ferdinand Schleicher (1900-1957) and Gerhard Sedlacek (1939-2012).
