Die Winklersche Halbebene liefert Setzungen nur dort, wo der Baugrund unmittelbar belastet wird, während die Theorie der elastischen Halbebene die Lastausbreitung im Boden bei der Berechnung von Setzungen berücksichtigt. Die Winklersche Halbebene hat den Vorteil des einfachen Rechenverfahrens, während das auf der elastischen Halbebene aufbauende Steifezifferverfahren relativ aufwendig ist.
